About us
Green City Action is dedicated to creating sustainable, thriving communities through environmental initiatives that empower Sheffield residents.
Who are we
Green City Action is a vibrant community organization based in Sheffield dedicated to creating sustainable, green spaces through community allotments and urban gardening initiatives.
We’re a diverse group of passionate gardeners, environmental educators, and community activists who believe in the power of growing food together. Our team works tirelessly to transform unused urban spaces into thriving gardens that bring people together while promoting ecological awareness.
As a registered non-profit organization, we’re committed to making Sheffield greener, more sustainable, and more connected through shared gardening experiences that bridge cultural, social, and generational divides.

Our Values
These principles guide everything we do at Green City Action.
Community First
We believe that strong communities are the foundation of a healthy society. Our allotments create spaces where people from all walks of life can come together.
Environmental Sustainability
We practice and teach organic, sustainable methods of food production that work with nature rather than against it, preserving our planet for future generations.
Inclusivity
Our spaces and programs are designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, experience, or physical ability. Gardening is for all.
Our Purpose
We believe that community allotments can address multiple challenges simultaneously: food insecurity, social isolation, mental health issues, and environmental degradation. By bringing people together to grow food, we create spaces for learning, connection, and positive change.
Our vision is of a Sheffield where everyone has access to green spaces, the knowledge to grow their own food, and the opportunity to be part of a supportive community connected to nature and each other.
Our mission is to promote sustainable living, increase access to fresh, local food, and create stronger, more resilient communities through shared gardening experiences.

Our History
The story of The Charity and how we’ve grown over the years.
Humble Beginnings
The Wild Charity was established by a small group of enthusiastic gardeners who secured a small plot of overgrown land in Sheffield to create a community garden.
Expansion to Grimesthorpe Road
After outgrowing our original site, we moved to our current llocation on Grimesthorpe Road, where we began developing our flagship allotment site.
Educational Programs Launch
We launched our first formal educational programs, including workshops for adults and school garden initiatives, reaching over 200 participants in the first year.
Community Kitchen Addition
Added our community kitchen facility, allowing us to host cooking classes using produce from the gardens and hold community meals that bring people together.
Community Kitchen Addition
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we pivoted to provide emergency food growing kits to vulnerable households and online gardening workshops, supporting our community when they needed it most.
Growing Strong
Today, Green City Action manages over 40 community allotment plots, runs hundreds of workshops annually, and works with 12 local schools to promote sustainable gardening and food production.
